The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey is a recognised world-leader in biosciences research and currently supports 4000 students in a variety of teaching environments. In the latest UK research excellence framework (REF 2014) we were rated one of the top eight UK institutions for biosciences, health and veterinary research.

We are looking to recruit a skilled laboratory technician to support our Systems Biology research laboratories within the School of Biosciences and Medicine, to cover one year fixed term maternity leave. Duties include delivering Health & Safety initiatives, testing/calibration of lab equipment, working with Principal Investigators to support individual researchers and developing transferable skills across the School of Biosciences & Medicine. The ideal candidate will have some previous experience of working in a laboratory, a strong understanding of laboratory Health & Safety, good communication skills and a practical approach to work. The post will involve the manual handling of sensitive equipment and the post holders will need to work flexibly and in a closely collaborative manner towards agreed goals.

You will primarily be responsible for providing support and high quality services to researchers and students within two research laboratories and one central research facility. The Systems Biology section includes researchers working in the areas of molecular biology, specifically gene expression and RNA biology, and molecular-microbiology, specifically larger scale bioreactor cultures, and utilising gene expression to optimise metabolic pathways. You will also support work carried out within the central genomics facility, which includes equipment used to identify and quantify nucleic acids and proteins. Working closely with the rest of the technical team, you will provide technical advice and support on a wide-variety of molecular biology and microbiology-related issues.
