Description :

An exciting opportunity exists for a research technician to work with Professor Barker on lakes and palaeoclimatology. This post will be involved in two projects working on Lake Challa, a 97m deep crater lake on the flank of Kilimanjaro. A project co-funded by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Programme, (ICDP), named DeepCHALLA, has recently recovered the lacustrine sediment sequence of Lake Challa down to 215 m below the lake floor ca.250,000 years old. The post will contribute to the ICDP DeepCHALLA project which has more than 30 scientists from 15 countries each bringing particular specialisms.  More specifically it will work on the UK component, DeepCHALLA-UK, which incorporates investigators from Cambridge University, British Geological Survey, Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre, and Queen’s University, Belfast. DeepCHALLA-UK is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

The work focuses on diatom samples for oxygen and carbon isotope analysis and samples for bulk carbon isotope analysis. The work will be undertaken in Lancaster’s stable isotope facility, at NERC Isotope Geoscience Laboratory, British Geological Survey and in Ghent, Belgium. Excellent technical skills are essential, ideally with experience of preparing diatom isotope samples and mass spectrometry. A PhD in is desirable. The willingness to travel is essential and an ability to contribute to the palaeoclimatic interpretation of the data and subsequent papers will be an advantage. The first sampling party in Ghent is scheduled for June 2017 so we would like to appoint the post holder from 1 June 2017.

This is a fixed term contract for 2 years.
