Description :

As part of its ambitious Research Strategy the University is making a significant investment in its research capacity and capability through five £ multi-million cross-disciplinary Beacons of Excellence (Beacons).  Beacons will represent a critical mass, undertaking a coherent and integrated portfolio of research, doctoral training and knowledge exchange activities in a well-defined research area, carrying out discovery and challenge-led research and related activities, with an objective to be demonstrably amongst the best in the world.  Beacons will sit outside but alongside one or more Faculties and will have their own financial and reporting structures.

We are now looking to appoint a Head of Operations for each Beacon of Excellence.

Reporting to and working with the Beacon Directors, the Head of Operations will support the Directors in the development and implementation of the Beacon Business Plan during the critical start-up period.  This will include identifying and managing risks, ensuring the necessary governance structures are established and functioning, and putting the necessary structures and expertise in place to enable the Beacon to meet its objectives.

The Head of Operations will have responsibility for manging the operational aspects of the Beacon such as budgeting and the recruitment and management of administrative staff.  The role holder will work closely with the Beacon Directors to support the development and implementation of strategy, provide support for the recruitment of academic staff and generally advise and support the Directors in all aspects of Beacon management, to enable the delivery of challenging objectives. As such they must have the ability to understand the multidisciplinary jargon and language of the multidisciplinary beacon and any demonstration of this would be an advantage.

Applicants should be to degree level or have equivalent relevant experience.  They should have proven experience of working in a senior administrative role within a complex research environment, including, but not limited to financial management, space planning, team leadership and the development and implementation of business systems and processes.  They should have the ability to provide advice, guidance and support to senior members of academic staff, excellent communication skills and the ability to solve problems in a creative and effective way.
