Description :

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath is internationally recognised as a leading centre for research and teaching in the built environment. The Department came joint top in the Architecture, Built Environment and Planning unit of assessment in the 2014 REF and we are consistently at the top of the league tables (First for Architecture and Third for Civil Engineering, 2017 Complete University Guide).

The Department wishes to appoint an outstanding and inspirational academic in Building Environmental Engineering or Building Physics. Applicants with a research background with a focus on human comfort and well-being are particularly welcome, but all areas of building environmental engineering will be considered. The post is advertised at Lecturer (Assistant Professor) level. The successful candidate will have a scholarly reputation, demonstrated by a significant record of high quality journal publications in the relevant field. They will be expected to develop, largely through external funding, a research team in their specialist area. We would generally expect applicants for Lecturer level to have some post-doctoral experience.

The post holder is expected to make a significant contribution to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. We are therefore looking for someone with a dedication to the delivery of high quality teaching across a range of subjects within their broad area of expertise. Due to the joint nature of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, collaborative, integrated studio based design is central to our undergraduate teaching across all disciplines. With this in mind, some experience of practical architectural/engineering design through industry experience would be an advantage. Other duties will depend upon the background of the post holder.

All applicants must include a CV and two-page outline of their plans and intentions for research activity and grant capture over the coming five years. This document will be treated in the strictest confidence and with full respect for ownership. This is a mandatory component of the selection process, without which we will be unable to progress your application.

Informal enquiries about the post may be made to Professor Stephen Emmitt (+44 (0)1225 384722, email S.Emmitt@bath.ac.uk), Head of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering; or Dr Antony Darby (+44 (0)1225 38 383182, email A.P.Darby@bath.ac.uk), Head of Civil Engineering; or Professor Alex Wright (+44 (0)1225 386604, email A.W.Wright@bath.ac.uk).

Both the Department and the University are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment and the Department recently received an Athena SWAN bronze award.  We are working to improve the present gender balance within the Department, and particularly welcome applications from women, who are currently under-represented in academic posts.
