Description :

Supervisor name: Dr Peter J Roth

Funding: Directly Funded Project (European/UK Students only)

Deadline: 25 June 2017

Project Title: Functional Polymer Coatings

Research Group: Polymer Chemistry Research Group

A studentship for a PhD in chemistry is available for a highly motivated candidate with a first or high second class degree (or international equivalent) in chemistry or materials science. You should have experience in synthetic organic chemistry and an interest in polymer chemistry, nanomaterials, and surface characterization.

This is an industry-funded studentship with experimental work split between the University of Surrey (within the polymer chemistry research group led by Dr Peter Roth) and a local company who specialise in cable harnesses for harsh environments.

The project is based on the synthesis and characterization of novel reactive polymers and their application as coating materials and exceptionally strong adhesives. The successful candidate will be trained in relevant methods and procedures at both sites and will be able to test the performance of synthesized materials in devices assembled in the labs of the industrial partner. This work may involve the generation of intellectual property and will require the student to enter into a confidentiality agreement.

Application Procedure:

For more information and to apply for this studentship please email Dr Peter Roth at p.roth@surrey.ac.uk. Please include a cover letter, a CV containing final BSc/MSc (or equivalent) marks, and transcripts with individual course marks. Funding includes a standard stipend (£14,553 per year), travel costs (e.g. conference), bench fees and tuition fees at the home/EU rate. Nationals of other countries may apply but need to address in their cover letter how the international tuition fees will be covered. Successful candidates will be required to undergo a ‘baseline personnel security standard (BPSS)’ check and must sign a UK MOD confidentiality agreement DEFFORM 702.

Funding Notes:

This is a fully funded PhD for UK and EU students including a tax-free stipend, which in 2017/18 will be £14,553
