Senior Teaching Fellows in Community Based Learning (2 posts x 0.5 FTE)

(Fixed Term 18 months)

The University of Surrey is seeking to establish two Community Learning Senior Teaching Fellows, each at 0.5 FTE, under the leadership of the Associate Dean for Medicine in the School of Biosciences and Medicine. These Senior Teaching Fellows will be responsible for the development of an academic and administrative Primary and Community Based Learning educational support infrastructure for undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching at the University of Surrey. This infrastructure will need to be capable of delivering medical education programmes that fully meet current and future regulatory requirements, and which deliver an excellent student experience.

The University of Surrey is preparing to submit a bid for a new medical school in the autumn of 2017, to start in September 2019. The roles advertised here will include a significant contribution to the development of the curriculum and assessments relevant to a new undergraduate community-facing Medical School - preparation and establishment of community –based training clinical placements, development of contracts and relationships with GP practices and GP undergraduate tutors, student community projects, and student selected components (SSCs) of the new programme in Community and Primary Care. Community placements will be in General Practices across Surrey and North Hampshire, but also in other community health and social care settings as required by the curriculum learning outcomes.

These roles will also strengthen and develop the community-based training clinical placements already in place for the Physician Associate Post Graduate Diploma established at the University of Surrey in September 2016, working with the Programme Director for the PGDip in PA Studies.

In addition, the post-holder will contribute to the development of new courses and education provision in inter-professional post graduate training in Primary Care, delivered at the University of Surrey, working in close collaboration with Health Education Kent, Surrey, Sussex (HEKSS), as part of the Medical School’s educational strategy.

The role requires a good working knowledge of medical education principles and practice, and excellent communication and negotiating skills required to develop successful relationships with NHS and other partners. The post holders will be expected to represent the community –based learning aspects of the programme internally within the university and externally to a wide range of stakeholders at a senior level. The successful applicants would ideally hold a current GMC licence and medical educational qualification, and have at least three years’ experience of working in general practice.

The University of Surrey has an outstanding track record in Education and Research, being in the ‘Top 10’ Universities in all three major national league tables in 2015 – 2016, and recently awarded the ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ from the Times/ Sunday Times Good University Guide. It also holds a Gold Award in the new Teaching Excellence Framework Assessment, for quality of teaching and learning provision. The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences consists of four Schools (Biosciences and Medicine, Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Psychology), with a common ‘One Health’ ethos across the Faculty. The University of Surrey is actively expanding its medical portfolio, and sees the Physicians Associates course as a key initial initiative in its ambitious development of Medical Education.

In addition to salary you will receive a generous annual leave entitlement and excellent development opportunities. We also offer an exclusive discounted membership package to all our staff for the Surrey Sports Park.
