The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), a world-leading centre in acoustics and audio engineering, invites outstanding researchers to help pioneer the next generation of 3D audio capture technologies.

Working with Prof. Filippo Fazi and Prof. Philip Nelson, in collaboration with Huawei, you will contribute to cutting-edge projects that push the boundaries of spatial audio, microphone array design, and portable device technology. You’ll be part of a vibrant, multi-disciplinary research environment, drawing expertise from across the University of Southampton, and helping to shape revolutionary listening experiences that will impact industries worldwide.

About the role

You will lead a key project on spatial audio capture, exploring innovative microphone array processing and real-time audio programming. Your work will not only advance the science but also influence real-world applications—from consumer electronics to immersive environments.

About you

You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in acoustics, signal processing, audio engineering, or a related discipline. We particularly value expertise in:

About the ISVR and the University of Southampton

The ISVR has been at the forefront of sound and vibration research and education since its inception more than 60 years ago. The Institute has built an international reputation through pioneering academic research, strong and enduring collaborations with industry, and generations of graduates who have spread throughout the acoustics profession. The ISVR has excellent experimental facilities including anechoic and reverberation chambers, a 6-axis motion simulator and multiple audio focused laboratories. In addition, we are currently making substantial investments to refurbish our audio research and teaching facilities. 

The ISVR is part of the School of Engineering at the University of Southampton, which is one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering research.  The School has an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad. 

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
