About the role

The UKRI Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship Project and related neurotechnology research at the University of Bath, led by Professor Damien Coyle, aims to develop next-generation AI methods to translate electrophysiological signals into control signals for brain–computer interface (BCI) technologies. These advances will be trialled at scale with end-users, driving the development of robust, wearable neurotechnologies.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for a researcher with expertise in neural signal processing and AI/machine learning for the analysis, classification, and decoding of high-resolution electroencephalography (EEG).

Working with Prof Coyle and the Turing AI Fellowship team at the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human, the Research Associate will:-

Design and implement novel AI models and algorithmsContribute to the planning and execution of research experiments with human participantsManage and analyse large, complex datasetsDevelop software and prototype real-time AI solutionsPublish results in high-impact journals and conferencesCollaborate with AI researchers, engineers, neuroscientists, psychologists, trials managers, and neuroimaging experts across multiple projects

By advancing novel AI approaches and demonstrating them in large-scale trials, this project has the potential to transform the future of neurotechnology — enabling more reliable BCIs, accelerating clinical translation for rehabilitation, and contributing to the broader vision of safe and effective human augmentation.

About you

We are looking for a motivated researcher who can get projects off the ground quickly and make a meaningful contribution within a 4-month fixed-term post. You will bring strong technical expertise and a collaborative approach to help deliver high-quality research outputs in a short timeframe. This role is ideal for a researcher keen to make an immediate contribution and strengthen their profile in AI for neurotechnology through impactful short-term work.

AI/ML research, particularly deep learning using platforms such as Keras, PyTorch, or TensorFlowDeveloping and testing novel or customised AI models for complex, noisy, real-world datasetsSoftware optimisation for high-performance computing on CPU and GPU clustersVR/AR or game development for applications including BCIFurther information

For an informal discussion relating to the role, please contact Prof Damien Coyle, dhc30@bath.ac.uk or Dr Yue Zhang yz4604@bath.ac.uk

The post may involve travel within the UK and internationally, occasional extended stays off-campus, and the need to arrange and manage travel logistics and expenses. Access to personal transport may be advantageous.
