Research Laboratory Technician (0339-26)

We are looking for a Research Technician to support our research studies investigating the reversal of snake venom neurotoxicity. The position is funded by an Academy of Medical Sciences grant awarded to Dr. Stefanie Menzies, and is available for 18 months (full time at 1.0 FTE).

You will play an active hands-on role in the lab, carrying out experiments in molecular biology, protein expression and purification, antibody discovery, assay development, and venom activity testing, while also providing broader technical and laboratory support.

You will contribute to the day-to-day running of the lab through equipment upkeep, preparation of reagents and buffers, stock management, ordering consumables, record keeping, and support with health and safety and regulatory documentation. This role offers valuable practical experience in a dynamic research environment and the opportunity to contribute to impactful work aimed at developing biologic strategies to reverse neurotoxicity.

Role responsibilities

As part of a friendly and collaborative team, you will be responsible for:

Carrying out defined laboratory experiments, including molecular biology, protein purification, assay development, antibody discovery, and venom activity assaysMaintaining accurate experimental records and supporting data organisation and managementSupporting the day-to-day running of the lab, including preparing reagents, maintaining equipment, managing stock, and ordering consumablesAssisting with laboratory administration, including health and safety documentation, record keeping, and coordination with collaboratorsProviding technical support and training to students and other lab membersParticipating in lab meetings, training, and relevant outreach or engagement activities

About you

We are keen to hear from candidates who have:

A degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or a related disciplinePractical laboratory experience in biological researchStrong organisational skills, with the ability to manage time effectively and support multiple aspects of laboratory and project activityA proactive approach to problem-solving and technical troubleshooting, with the confidence to take initiative and work independentlyExcellent written and verbal communication skills, and a collaborative, team-oriented approachA high level of attention to detail and commitment to accurate record keeping

Experience in areas such as cloning, protein expression and purification, antibody-related methods, assay development, or general molecular biology techniques would be advantageous. Experience of supporting laboratory operations, including inventory management, ordering, and health and safety documentation, would also be beneficial. Training will be provided where needed. Most importantly, you will bring enthusiasm, adaptability, and a commitment to supporting high-quality research.
