In collaboration with Artelo Biosciences (http://artelobio.com/), this exciting industrially sponsored PhD studentship will look at developing novel cannabinoid based medicines that might be used to treat various disorders including, but not limited to, cardiovascular disorders, cancer and inflammation. The project will involve basic pharmacological laboratory experiments combined with healthy volunteer studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for the conduct, analysis and write up of experiments outlined by the supervisors, with input from Artelo Biosciences. The student will be encouraged to present their data regularly at Journal/Data Clubs and at Faculty Poster/Oral presentation days, and are encouraged to present at national and international research meetings for which there is School and University funding available.
The studentship is for 3 years and is intended to start on September 1st 2017. The studentship provides a tax-free stipend of £15,000 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK rate. Please note that due to restrictions imposed by the funder only students with a UK fee status will be considered for this position.
Students will normally need to hold at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent). A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be a strong advantage: cannabinoid pharmacology, cell culture, immunoassays, healthy volunteer human studies, pharmacokinetics.

The PhD is hosted in the Division of Medical Sciences and Graduate Entry Medicine, working within the Vascular Medicine Group, which consists of basic scientists, NHS consultants specialising in diabetes and stroke, clinical research fellows, PhD students and undergraduate research students, providing a thriving research community.
