تفاصيل :

Recently progress in high temperature superconducting (HTS) cables presents exciting new opportunities for energy applications including superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) and novel tokamak for next generation fusion reactors. High current cables, instead of single composite conductor strand, bring greater control of device inductance for higher power output in SMES and more optimisation of superconducting windings for stability and robust manufacturing. The PhD project will be an integral part of the applied superconductivity research at the Institute of Cryogenics and focus on the testing/modelling of superconducting coils wind with high current cables. The research will benefit from collaborations with leading companies in the field including Oxford Instruments and Tokamak Energy. While energy application focused, the research also applies to other superconducting magnets such as future accelerators at CERN, who has been a close collaboration partners for more than 20 years. Aspiring candidates should have a bachelor or master degree in physics, mechanical/electrical/chemical engineering and material sciences.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Prof Y Yang at Energy research group, Email: y.yang@soton.ac.uk Tel: +44 (0) 2380 593204.
