Applications are invited for the above post based within the School of Biosciences at the Sutton Bonington Campus.
The position will form part of a team associated with the BBSRC funded project entitled “Developing systems to control male fertility in wheat for hybrid breeding, enhanced pollen production and increased yield “. Control of fertility and successful reproduction is key to grain set and thus crop yield in cereals. This programme will provide greater understanding of pollen development in cereals towards controlling wheat fertility, but also by identifying traits for enhanced pollen production and viability, particularly under environmental stress.
The role is to provide specialist technical support in laboratory analysis & plant maintenance.
Duties will include;
Generation of molecular constructs & transformation of plant material (including wheat, arabidopsis & rice)Laboratory analysis: molecular genetics eg. running gels, PCR, expression analysis, developing mediaBioinformatic analysis: molecular cytogenetics – genomic in situ hybridisationPlant maintenance: potting, watering, collecting & sowing seed.Ensuring stocks & equipment in own areas of responsibility are maintained & available for use.Maintaining a safe working environment in accordance with statutory & University Health & Safety procedures.Full details can be found in the job description.
Candidates must have a minimum of HNC in a relevant subject, or equivalent qualifications plus considerable relevant technical/scientific experience in a relevant role OR substantial work experience in a relevant technical or scientific role.
The role holder should be able to demonstrate proven molecular biology skills & a good working knowledge of techniques including PCR. Experience working in the area of plant biology & genetics would be desirable.
Experience in large-scale plant maintenance, husbandry is essential to the role, some experience of transformation of monocot plant species, and analysis of traits linked to plant reproduction would be desirable.
The successful candidate should be a proficient computer user & demonstrate good IT skills.
This part-time position (18.12 hours per week) is fixed-term until 30 September 2020 and is available immediately.
