The University of Nottingham is inviting applications for a Research Associate/Fellow to join the Mendiondo group based at Sutton Bonington.

The researcher will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to investigate the molecular basis of abiotic stress resistance in B. rapa, addresses the research objective of the South African Water Research Commission concerning the increase in understanding of the link between water scarcity and crop nutritional value. Understanding this linkage will help address nutritional deficits in poor rural areas located in marginal agricultural production areas, while also preparing the way for the development of local popular varieties containing the increase abiotic stress tolerance mutants, with potentially reduced rates of nutritional losses. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working on translational science. Global warming and the predicted impact on seasonal rain-fall variation suggest that we may see both drier and wetter growing seasons in the future. Research into breeding strategies for maintaining yield in the face of climate change is key for future food security. This project will use non-GMO biotechnology genetic resources to help breeders, farmers and policy makers to increase the consumption of leafy vegetables one of the Southern Africa government policy priorities.

The successful candidate will work in partnership with University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), University of Zimbabwe, University of Nottingham (Malaysia) and Southern Cross University (Australia).

Candidates must have, or be close to completion of, a PhD in Biology, Plant Sciences or Crop Molecular Genetics. Proven experience in plant molecular biology, understanding of the principles of controlled crossing in crop species, bioinformatics and the ability to generate manuscripts from research are essential requirements for the post.

Applicants must be computer literate in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and in the use of standard computing tools for molecular biology.

This is a fixed-term post until 31 July 2020. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week), however job share arrangements may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Guillermina Mendiondo, tel: 0115 951 16964 or email guillermina.mendiondo@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
