The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) home of the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) is looking to recruit two research fellows (RA1 and RA2 levels) in Advanced Signal Processing for Future Communication Systems. The successfulcandidates will be part of the Wireless Systems Lab and will have the opportunity to work very close with our industrial partners as well as academic partners all over the world.

The successful candidate will be part of a group that focuses on advanced signal processing architectures for future communication systems and their efficient realization on hardware platforms (i.e., algorithmic architectural co-design), as well as on experimentation and concept validation via software defined radios. Targeting orders of magnitude improvement in processing latency and/or energy consumption -as well as “massive” device connectivity- the research bridges three complimentary research areas in the field of advanced wireless systems: (a) aggressively non-orthogonal signal transmissions, where we transmit mutually interfering information streams  as in the case of large multi-user multiple antenna (MIMO) systems and non-orthogonal multiple-access schemes, (b) advanced channel encoding/decoding schemes including iterative soft-input, soft-output transceiver processing and (c) advanced transceiver design and computing for advanced wireless communication systems, including massively parallel physical layer computing as well as physical layer architectures for challenging non-orthogonal signal transmissions and enhanced medium access.

ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising on all aspects of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is home to over 200 researchers with expertise in all communication and broadcasting systems and has developed the best in class large scale testbeds for research and innovation and enjoys the state of the art lab and computing facilities.

5GIC established in 2012, is the world’s first dedicated centre in researching end-to-end aspects of 5G and works closely with national and international leading academic institutes and key industrial partners.

The successful candidate will be joining a very strong and vibrant research team and will be supported by academic staff and PhD students working on the programme, although he/she will be expected to coordinate as well as contribute to the research.

The post holder must have expertise in at least two of the following:

Strong expertise in signal processing for wireless communication systems Very good understanding of multiuser Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, beamforming methods, and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) systems  Very good understanding of communications theory Recent research experience in the development of advanced physical layer algorithms and systems Very good understanding of state-of-the-art detection, interference handling, and channel encoding/decoding methods Track record of publications in highly ranked journals and conferences in at least one of the above fields

It would be desirable but not essential for the post holder to also have:

Embedded, real-time C/C++ development and multiprocessing An understanding of the current and future activities of the University and the 5GIC An overall working knowledge of cellular networks (e.g., LTE) Python and Linux shell scripting experience Prior experience with wireless research platforms (e.g., USRPs, WARPs)
