Applications are invited for a 4 year PhD studentship within the EPSRC Thematic Doctoral Programme: SiMDisc (Science informed Manufacturing for Scientific Discovery)

Project description

In a previous study Siemens supported the work of Dr Sam Catchpole-Smith (UoN PhD grad (2019)). The work centred around designing and evaluating new lattice configurations for heat transfer applications in gas turbines. The project outcomes were considered a great success and this is now informing the development of new designs for nozzle guide veins within the business.

The purpose of the present work is to expand the design and evaluate methodology still further to support business activities in new areas. This remains a fundamental challenge since the route to devising solutions, manufacturing and implementing them is arduous. This project will address challenges around automated design and evaluated processes for both new part manufacture.

Upon initiation the student will audit using numerical methods the opportunities for advantage based on the understanding acquired in the preceding project. This will be used to identify target case studies for redesign. Where thermal evaluation is required the student will make use of custom built facilities available at UoN.

Kanazawa University boasts unique ‘hybrid’ fabrication apparatus which has not be evaluated for the purposes of the structures proposed here. Hence the student will benefit from an international experience well aligned to the core project. . They will benefit from links to national and international partners, including the Kanazawa University in Japan and Siemens Turbomachinery.

Supervisory Team: Prof Adam Clare (Engineering), Prof Chris Tuck (Engineering), Dr Simon Preston (Mathematics)
