Project description

Applications are invited for PhD research, to be undertaken at the University of Southampton (School of Electronics and Computer Science, ECS). The successful candidate will join a new European project ‘Smart Textiles for Regional Industry and Smart Specialisation Sectors (SmartT)’. This is an exciting cutting-edge project involving collaborations between ECS and Chemistry at the University of Southampton, SplashMaps Ltd (UK), CNRS (Normandy Regional Delegation, France), INSA Rouen Normandy (France) and IFREMER (French Institute for Ocean Science, Brittany, France). The successful candidate will be based in Southampton, but will have the opportunity to travel to attend research meetings and work with our partners.

The SmartT project involves the formulation of innovative light emitting inks that can be printed directly onto textiles. Our Chemistry partners will be synthesising active molecules that define the wavelength of the emitted light and ink characteristic.  Work in ECS will focus on the printing methods and circuitry leading to working prototypes and devices. This technology has the potential to revolutionise textiles by enabling them to emit light at a multitude of visible and UV wavelengths. Applications are envisioned in areas such as smart bandages, mapping tools, safety devices and more. The PhD will undertake research in the following areas related to the development of the inks and the printing of functioning light emitting devices:

• Ink formulation for screen/inkjet printing and/or spray coating
• Organic Light Emitting Cell (OLEC) design and fabrication
• Material and device testing and optimisation
• Fabrication of demonstrator systems on textiles

The successful candidate will be based in ECS as part of the Smart Electronic Materials and Systems Group where you will join a vibrant team of students and researchers working in the Printed Electronic Materials Laboratory. You will work in the project as part of a team including colleagues in Chemistry and across the consortium.

About the research environment
The studentship is based in the Smart Electronic Materials and Systems (SEMS) research group (www.sems.ecs.soton.ac.uk). Ranked in the top 1% of universities globally and among the UK’s top 20 for research, the University of Southampton has an international reputation for its research, teaching and enterprise activities.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. University of Southampton holds an Athena Swan Silver Award. The University has a generous maternity policy and onsite childcare facilities; employees are able to participate in the childcare vouchers scheme.
