The Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI) invites applications from excellent candidates for a three-year fixed-term Mathematical Innovation Research Associate (MIRA) position to provide mathematical and statistical expertise on a broad range of research proposals and projects. Come and join our enthusiastic team to collaborate with a wide range of academics from across the university. MIRAs roles are exciting and demanding requiring independence, intellectual flexibility and a proactive, can-do attitude.

MIRAs are a core team within IMI that provides expert input into the development of new research ideas and funding bids, in addition to conducting research on collaborative projects involving academics and industry. MIRAs participate in activities such as grant funding drives, scientific and knowledge exchange workshops, and open houses to promote IMI and the expertise we offer.

We want to develop long-lasting and strategic partnerships with academia, industry and non-academic institutions that result in maximal impact of the mathematical sciences. Health, manufacturing, environment and engineering are just a few of the areas in which we work. The IMI is building partnerships across the academic, international and industrial spectrum, adding value to cutting edge research and its application through mathematical modelling and data analytics. Mathematical Innovation Research Associates are central to these aims and values.

In this recruitment round we are specifically seeking to recruit a MIRA with skills and experience in applied statistics and machine learning with a willingness to apply their skills to projects from a variety of different areas.

Alongside completion of the online application form, it is essential that candidates upload a Curriculum Vitae, and a statement of research expertise and their experience working in multidisiciplinary teams and with external partners.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Caroline Ang (c.w.ang@bath.ac.uk), however, please apply online via the University website.

We live in the “era of mathematics”, where data, modelling, algorithms and artificial intelligence have become deeply rooted in all aspects of modern society. The Institute for Mathematical Innovation is leading the delivery of multi-disciplinary and mathematically grounded research informed by real-world, societal and industrial challenges. IMI partners with research centres of excellence, EPSRC centres for doctoral training and beyond, collaborating to add value to grant capture, delivery of research activities, driving innovation and impact.

There are close links between IMI and the Department of Mathematical Sciences which has over 70 academic staff from all areas of Mathematics, including around a dozen working in statistics. The department has a strong culture of collaboration across research areas, reinforced by our EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics at Bath (SAMBa).

Our campus is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the City of Bath with its historic charm and social activity only a short distance away creates an excellent environment in which to work. We encourage all staff to learn, develop new skills and progress their careers throughout their employment with us and believe our staff are vital in creating the University’s inclusive and innovative community.
