The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to recruit a Lecturer in either a Teaching-only or a Teaching and Research role, able to contribute to Design teaching.

The major teaching element of the role is to co-ordinate and support the full-time Group Business and Design Project (GBDP), which is a key part of the third year of our undergraduate degree programmes. In the GBDP project, students learn to integrate business tools and methods in large technical design and development projects to solve problems, often set by industry.

Candidates with a PhD and suitable research track record may be appointed on a Teaching and Research contract, and will be expected to publish high-quality research papers, demonstrate the potential to obtain significant external research funding, and supervise postgraduate research students.  You will need to be able to contribute to one or more of our priority research areas:  advanced manufacturing (including robotics, control, data and design), energy (generation, transmission and storage, including future fuels), net zero transport, advanced materials, biosensors / biomedical engineering, sustainability and climate change adaptation.

You will be expected to design and deliver high quality teaching informed by significant experience gained through industrial practice, previous teaching roles, or research.  Teaching duties will include:

Preparation of teaching material; delivery of lectures, tutorials, and studio sessionsAssessment and marking of courseworkProviding advice and support to studentsPastoral care of students, in line with University policySupervision of student projectsTeaching-related management and administration dutiesContribution to innovation in the design and delivery of teaching.

The GBDP co-ordination role requires a knowledge of the engineering design process, and experience of mechanical design.   Engineering design experience gained in industry would be an advantage.  The role requires liaising with external industry contacts to help define project briefs.  You will work with and be supported by a team of academic supervisors, and a business specialist.  Working closely with staff running a parallel activity in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering is expected.

We are one of the leading Mechanical Engineering Departments in the UK, consistently near the top in league tables, with about 70 academic staff. You will benefit from the supportive, collaborative and well-organised Department and Faculty system at the University. There is a strong culture of providing newly appointed staff the necessary support and freedom to develop their academic careers.

Typically this application would be aimed at the EPSRC New Investigator Award and it would be expected that the successful candidate submits this within the first year of the appointment. The document should be called ‘Research proposal’.

You may upload other documents if you wish.

As part of the selection process, you will normally be required to give a presentation to academic staff in the Department before being shortlisted for formal interview.
