The Division of Health Research (DHR) within Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Associate to join the Public Health group, to support the NIHR Three Research Schools Mental Health Practice Evaluation, specifically as part of an NIHR grant held by Professor Céu Mateus and Professor Mark Limmer.

Blackpool Local Authority experiences very high rates of drug misuse, drug crime and drug-related deaths and because of this, it has been chosen as one of five national pilot sites for a programme called Project ADDER.  This project involves different public services and voluntary groups in the town working together to support people with a high risk of committing drug-related crime or dying from drug use. Amongst other things, people entering the ADDER programme will be supported to get into treatment for their drug use.

Buvidal (Buprenorphine prolonged-release injection) is a new injection treatment for people who are dependent on heroin. It is a form of ‘opioid substitution therapy’. Buvidal is offered to people referred to drug treatment services through the Blackpool ADDER programme. Buvidal is an injection that is given once a week or once a month. There is very limited evidence on Buvidal use in community settings, but it may be of benefit for those who find it difficult to attend for daily supervised medication. Blackpool ADDER is especially focused on those who find it hard to engage with services, hence the reason for using Buvidal within the programme.

This research seeks to better understand the experiences and outcomes, (including drug treatment, health and wellbeing, criminal justice and social outcomes), of people enrolled in Blackpool’s ADDER programme and started on Buvidal, in comparison to those enrolled and started on other forms of opioid substitution therapy.

Our work is expected to generate evidence to help policy makers to decide on the roll out of this medication in other communities. We will gain a better understanding of what those who use Buvidal appreciate about the medication and the way it is given, and about what can be improved.

You must have a PhD qualification in a relevant discipline, and have experience qualitative research methods, relevant to research in this field. You will also have experience of conducting research in community settings, presenting findings to a range of audiences and writing for peer reviewed publication.

The Faculty provides an environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee, promoting a healthy work-life balance. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education.
