Applications are invited for a Research Associate/Fellow to work on a BBSRC funded project investigating cell fate regulation during gastrulation.  The role is based in Dr Osvaldo Chara’s laboratory, in collaboration with Prof Ramiro Alberio, in the Division of Animal Sciences, School of Biosciences, at the University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington Campus.

The project investigates the mechanisms of gastrulation in mammals. The recruited researcher will investigate the interplay between biochemical signals, cell geometry and movement during symmetry breaking and primitive streak (PS) formation during gastrulation. This position will especially suit candidates with interest in understanding the governing principles ruling tissue morphogenesis during embryonic development. The successful candidate will be a modeller who will perform image analysis and develop multi-scale cell-based computational models of tissues during gastrulation in bilaminar disc embryos.

This post offers a unique opportunity to develop skills in state-of-the-art image analysis and modelling technologies, where experimental data of spatial transcriptomics of gastrulating embryos and gastruloids will be generated. The role holder will use image analysis of these experimental systems to segment cell geometric and topological features that will be used to feed the models to generate testable hypotheses.

Applicants must be highly motivated and self-driven, with a PhD in computational biology, biophysics, systems biology or related area of biological science (PhD students about to submit their thesis will be considered). Considerable experience in modelling biological problems is essential. A track record of publishing research is desirable.

The post is available as soon as possible and will be offered on a fixed-term contract of 2 years. This is a full-time post (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.

For informal enquiries please email Osvaldo Chara (osvaldo.chara@nottingham.ac.uk)
Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
