International Virtual Course: Introduction to Astrophysical Modelling & Computation

In astronomy, our objects of interest (such as stars, galaxies, etc.) are distant and not accessible to any kind of manipulation. Experiments are very difficult or can’t be performed. Also, in many cases, observations are very limited. The situation is further complicated because the physical processes giving rise to the astrophysical phenomenon may occur deep inside the observed object, providing only indirect evidence of these processes, the processes may involve extreme conditions which are experimentally inaccessible in the laboratory, and the processes often occur on time scales long compared to the human life span. Therefore, modelling and computation are very important to understand the properties or behavior of the astrophysical objects. This course aims to provide a comprehensive knowledge about astrophysical modeling and computation, and their application on various astronomical research topics. In addition to online classes, participants will also be given hands-on to be done individually or in groups. This course is open for both students and professionals alike who have background in astrophysics, physics or related field and are comfortable with basic programming. There is no tuition fee for ITB and international students.
