EMBO Lecture Course — Tumour metabolism: Current understanding and opportunities for novel drug discovery

The unique glycolytic behaviour is present in nearly all cancer cell types. Cancer cells quickly adapt and reprogram glucose metabolism to meet their bioenergetic and biosynthetic requirements for growth and survival. A key to developing novel and effective cancer therapies is to tackle the complex metabolic ecosystem that cancer and stroma cells establish within the tumour microenvironment. This metabolic ecosystem ensures the high demand of energy and essential nutrients for tumour progression. Research on the distinct metabolic phenotype of cancer cells compared to normal cells is growing steadily to target metabolic vulnerabilities for new therapeutics in cancer.
