The role

We are seeking an Ion Beam Analysis Experimental Officer to join the Surrey Ion Beam Centre, an EPSRC-funded national facility, to play a pivotal role in operating, maintaining, and advancing our ion beam capabilities. 

In this role, you will be responsible for or involved in: 

• Day-to-day operation of the equipment in the Tandem laboratory, and its associated systems, including the unique, state-of-the-art multimodal imaging instrument 

• User and customer support 

• Experimental setup 

• Continuous development of facility capabilities 

• Monitor and manage stocks of critical spare parts, consumables, and supplies, and coordinate procurement 

• Maintain documentation, logs, and records of experiments, maintenance, safety checks, and performance metrics 

• Adhere to all health & safety, radiation protection, and regulatory requirements applicable to accelerator operations 

You will work alongside academic staff, researchers, and postgraduate students to deliver high quality ion beam analysis and enable cutting-edge research into a wide range of applications from biotechnology, material sciences and energy. 

This is a fixed term EPSRC-funded position, with the possibility of extension depending on funding and performance. It is an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled, proactive individual to work at the heart of a world-class research environment. 

About you

• BSc or BEng (or equivalent) in Physics, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. 

• Experience in operating, maintaining, or repairing technical/scientific equipment (vacuum systems, electronic instrumentation, control systems, high voltage, etc.). 

• Knowledge of accelerator physics, beam optics, ion beam systems, vacuum systems, or related instrumentation would be beneficial 

• Awareness of health & safety practices, radiation safety, regulatory compliance in a laboratory/instrumentation environment. 

• Strong problem-solving skills, initiative, and ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

• Excellent organisational, documentation, and communication skills.
