Description :

This role is part of the University’s Rights Lab Beacon of Excellence, which is delivering research to help end modern slavery. The role-holder will lead the Rights Lab’s work on modern slavery and law, seeking to answer the question: how can States construct the legal frameworks for effective antislavery governance?

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the role-holder will initiate and execute new research, develop new funding applications in support of the research programme, deliver high quality publications in the area (including for REF2021), deliver relevant policy and research reports, and take responsibility for delivering impact. The role holder will manage relationships with international, national and local partners and stakeholders, and develop the capacity of the research team, with mentoring for existing and new members. The role holder will have a public-facing role and represent the team externally.

In order to maximise the possibilities for collaborative and team-based work, the role holder should bring at least three of the following areas of expertise: the definitions of, and relationships between, slavery and other related forms of exploitation in international law; the definitions of slavery and related exploitation in the national legislation of all 193 UN Member States and their alignment with international understandings; trends, successes, and failures in domestic laws governing slavery globally and their fulfilment of States’ international obligations in this regard; survivors’ perceptions of justice and the requirements of legal frameworks and protections with regard to slavery; the relationship between external factors and effective national legal frameworks, in order to determine the factors that influence effectiveness with regard to legislation governing slavery and related exploitation.

The role-holder should have a track record of applying for research income. The role will involve PhD supervision and project management as its teaching and administrative responsibilities.
