Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to undertake legal research work for a fixed term of 2 years commencing 2 September 2019 on an EPSRC funded research project on explainability. See https://plead-project.org/. PLEAD brings together an interdisciplinary team of technologists, legal experts, commercial companies and public organisations to investigate how provenance can help explain the logic that underlies automated decision-making to the benefit of data subjects as well as help data controllers to demonstrate compliance with the law. The focus of the post will be to provide legal and ethical advice and analysis to the interdisciplinary team in order to inform the development of the project objectives. The successful applicant will be based at the University of Southampton collaborating with other project partners in the UK. Applicants must therefore want to work as part of a collaborative research team and be keen and able to travel.

Applicants should have a strong background in data protection law and either hold a PhD* in the relevant field or a professional legal qualification. Independent research planning, research methods, organisation, communication and writing skills are essential. The successful candidate will also be someone who can hit the ground running and work with a degree of independence and initiative in identifying, formulating, articulating and presenting the relevant legal input during the initial stages of the project.

This role is expected to start on 2 September 2019 and run to 31 August 2021.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
