Description :

Concrete material systems with the ability to initiate self-healing is a growing priority research area. We are able to offer an outstanding candidate the opportunity to develop such systems within the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials at the University of Bath.

The successful applicant will be tasked with undertaking research work to overcome application issues relating to the use of bacteria-based self-healing concrete (BBSHC) in structures and buildings. The role will involve laboratory and field applications. The applicant will investigate how to use BBSHC appropriately in construction, how it responds to cyclic damage and environmental conditions, and its effect on reinforcement corrosion. 

The position is part of an EPSRC-funded programme (Resilient Materials 4 Life, £4.7M) to develop self-healing and self-diagnosing construction materials. 

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant area of study such as civil engineering. A practical knowledge of cementitious materials would be a distinct advantage. Note that knowledge of microbiology is not required as this will be provided by colleagues in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry.

This post is full-time 36.5 hours per week and is being offered on a Fixed Term Contract basis of up to 24 months in the first instance. The successful applicant will ideally be available to start on 1 October 2019.
