Research Associate in Organisational Sustainability, Health and Urban Development (JB7073)

We are seeking to appoint a full-time post-doctoral Research Associate to join a major research partnership, funded by the UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP). This exciting and ground-breaking project is called ‘Tackling the Root causes Upstream of Unhealthy Urban Development’ (TRU3D)’. 

We aim to map out the complex system of decision making involved in urban development and to test how health issues linked to the built environment, in particular non-communicable diseases – e.g. respiratory illness and dementia linked to air pollution - can be factored into the decisions that shape our urban landscapes. We will provide decision-makers within two city/ city regions with evidence of what needs to change and how, then monitor subsequent impact. Due to the dominance of the private sector in urban development implementation, this post will play an important role in engaging with influential stakeholders such as major developers, land-owners/agents and investors.   

This ambitious project is being undertaken by a highly interdisciplinary consortium of academics across the UK led by University of Bristol’s Population Health Sciences department. This post will be situated within the University of Bath, School of Management.

On a full-time (36.5 hours per week), fixed term contract of up to 60 months, the successful candidate will have finished their PhD, and have experience collecting and analysing primary, qualitative data within the context of business. You will be part of a team of researchers who will contribute to data collection and analysis from multiple sources, and will form part of a team focused on delineating different organisational forms and structures that are more appropriate to improved sustainability outcomes - one goal of which is to create a corporate characterisation model to assess corporate structures and how they support planetary health and the prevention of ill-health. Finally, you will be expected to contribute to elite journal publications and other outputs for practitioner/general audiences.

You must have a strong understanding of sustainability within a management context, having already engaged businesses on sustainability matters, either through research or practical experience. Ideally, this will be combined with some knowledge either of health issues and/or urban development, or some experience in the design of interventions, whether at a cognitive or social level.
