Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Synthetic Biology

Duration: 36 months
Start date: 6th January 2020

A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the group of Dr. Jose Jimenez to design and engineer microbial communities as part of the project ‘Microbial Integration of Plastics in the Circular Economy (MIPLACE)’ sponsored by the BBSRC under the European Union ERA-CoBiotech programme.

The project aims at developing novel methods for the use of plastic PET as a feedstock for microbial transformations into molecules with added value. We hope this way to reduce the accumulation of hazardous plastic in the environment by creating alternative recycling approaches. In this project we will engineer microorganisms and communities for the efficient and evolutionary stable conversion of PET into chemicals used in the synthesis of bioplastics. For more information on the idea and potential implementations check the following publications from the lab: Salvador et al., 2019, Genes, 10(5):373 and Cavaliere et al., 2017, Environmental Microbiology 19(8):2949.

Previous experience in molecular biology and microbial communities will be advantageous but we encourage applications from other profiles. Hands-on experience producing and analysing large datasets (e.g. genomics and transcriptomics) is a plus. This is an interdisciplinary project that involves close collaboration with our partners in Germany, Spain and France, including taking part in project meetings. We would like to appoint an open-minded individual capable of leading our research and represent us internationally. Therefore, good communication skills are important. Ideally applicants should have published (or be about to publish) in peer-reviewed journals.

We are seeking an enthusiastic scientist that could help us deliver the MIPLACE vision but could also bring her or his own ideas. For us it is also important that the candidate is a team player and can contribute to an exciting but nurturing and supportive research environment by engaging with other team members. Our laboratory is located at the beautiful campus of the University of Surrey, a top 10 UK University close to London. The University of Surrey is internationally recognized for its research in Synthetic Biology and we also provide a generous benefits package including final salary pension scheme, relocation provision, and access to world-class leisure facilities.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr. Jose Jimenez (j.jimenez@surrey.ac.uk).

To apply please complete the application process, ensuring you include a cover letter, CV and the names of at least two references. Deadline for application is 10th November 2019. Interviews will start early December until the post is filled.
