The Nottingham BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (SCI1915)

Four year PhDs available in the research areas Agriculture and Food Security, Bioscience for Health and Biotechnology - Starting October 2020

Thanks to £15m of funding awarded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent in partnership with the National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) are able to offer a fully-funded innovative four-year doctoral training programme that will provide you with world-class training in biotechnology and biosciences. The DTP offers projects in three overarching research themes: agriculture and food security; bioscience for health; and biotechnology. There are 22 underlying research areas which cut across these three themes such as Ageing, Bioenergy, Crop Science, Immunology, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Pharmaceuticals and System Biology. 

We offer a wide range of skills development opportunities to prepare you for your career, whether in academia, industry, science policy and communication, education or beyond. You will also become part of a community that exchanges ideas and experiences within and across student groups. You will work alongside your peers for the first six months of your studies, splitting your time equally between high-level training and laboratory rotations. You will also take part in a three-month placement during your third year.

Requirements

Applications are invited from students with backgrounds in Bioscience, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical/Biochemical/Process Engineering, Environmental Science, Pharmacy, Computer Science, Maths or related disciplines who have/expect to graduate with a first/upper-second UK honours degree, or equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK. Students with an appropriate Master’s degree are particularly encouraged to apply.

Funding details

Funding is available for four years from late September 2020. This studentship includes a three-month full-time placement outside of the research environment. There are two types of scholarships available – a full award and a fees-only award. A full award covers tuition fee plus an annual stipend. This is set by the Research Councils and was £15,009 for 2019.

Please note that scholarships will be awarded on the following basis: 

Eligibility for full funding (fees and stipend) is restricted to Home and eligible EU students.

There are a limited number of places available covering both fees and stipend for EU Nationals who have not previously been ordinarily resident in the UK for three years.

International students are NOT eligible to apply.
