STEAMhouse supports businesses, start-ups and sole-traders to develop new ideas, skills, products and services. It is Birmingham City University’s centre for innovation, creative thinking, prototyping and business development.  

Owing the success of phase one, STEAMhouse is moving into a new phase of development. Expanding the provision to our members, we are looking to extend our opening hours and currently have exciting opportunities for a Duty Manager. The role will involves working with weekend technical staff & visitors. 

You will oversee the running of STEAMhouse on one evening and on Saturdays to oversee the set-up of events, and post-event breakdowns. As well as being responsible for the safe running of STEAMhouse during weekend sessions you will have:

Experience in technology, music or arts management or a related disciplineExperience of events management.Experience of documenting health & safety standards such as those for food, personal and personnel safety and safe event management.Strong customer service skills, communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.Good IT skillsGood problem solving skills with the ability to respond sensibly to the unexpected.Have a commercial outlook.

The first phase of STEAMhouse was created in partnership with Eastside Projects, with a mission to drive innovation and research to create business solutions that fuel long-term economic growth. 

It has supported entrepreneurs, sole traders, companies and citizens to build their businesses, develop new products and services and collaborate.  It provides access to free business support, maker space workshops and co-working space, as well as a programme of STEAMlabs and events.  

Between October 2019 and September 2022 we are extending our service offer to Digitally Enabling Technologies; VR, AR,XR. This phase is known as 1.5 and alongside these new services there will be additional facilities with the establishment of a new CAD suite, extended opening hours, and new staff members. 

We have secured funding, and the go-ahead, for the construction of the larger and final phase of STEAMhouse (2.0) which will be located on the main city centre BCU campus to support teaching, research, innovation, and enterprise.  

Once complete, Phase Two will boast a range of state-of-the-art equipment for businesses, artists and academics to take advantage of and help cement Birmingham’s reputation as one of the country’s leading start-up hotspots.
