STEAMhouse supports businesses, start-ups and sole-traders to develop new ideas, skills, products and services. It is Birmingham City University’s centre for innovation, creative thinking, prototyping and business development.

Owing the success of phase one, STEAMhouse is moving into a new phase of development. Expanding the provision to our members, we are looking to extend our opening hours and currently have exciting opportunities for 4 new technicians. The roles will involve working across our workshops; Digital Electronics, Digital Manufacture, Digital Design, Immersive Technologies, Materials Science and Resistant Materials. They would suit experienced technicians looking to be part of a growing and highly dynamic team, who want to support SME’s, artists and designers.

The role will include responsibility for the supervision of production workshops. You will work with SME users and provide support in a wide range of production techniques allowing them to make use of resources across the facility. The postholder will work with the Creative Director, Prototyping/Operations Manager and Programme Manager to manage the workshop equipment and will be involved in practical aspects equipment maintenance and recommending procurement of consumables.  

You will have:

HND or equivalent in relevant subjectBe able to demonstrate practical experience in a relevant occupation, function, trade or craft. This experience may be from an educational or industry environment, preferably a combination of both.Good IT skills including knowledge of specialist systems and software relevant to technical areas and familiarity with Microsoft Office.Good written and verbal communication skillsBe able to demonstrate knowledge of equipment, technology, processes and techniquesAbility to engage the interest of students and support their learning.Understanding of relevant health and safety requirementsAn organised approach to work with the ability work on own initiativeAbility to prioritise different tasks efficiently.

The first phase of STEAMhouse was created in partnership with Eastside Projects, with a mission to drive innovation and research to create business solutions that fuel long-term economic growth. 

It has supported entrepreneurs, sole traders, companies and citizens to build their businesses, develop new products and services and collaborate.  It provides access to free business support, maker space workshops and co-working space, as well as a programme of STEAMlabs and events.  

Between October 2019 and September 2022 we are extending our service offer to Digitally Enabling Technologies; VR, AR,XR. This phase is known as 1.5 and alongside these new services there will be additional facilities with the establishment of a new CAD suite, extended opening hours, and new staff members. 

We have secured funding, and the go-ahead, for the construction of the larger and final phase of STEAMhouse (2.0) which will be located on the main city centre BCU campus to support teaching, research, innovation, and enterprise.  

Once complete, Phase Two will boast a range of state-of-the-art equipment for businesses, artists and academics to take advantage of and help cement Birmingham’s reputation as one of the country’s leading start-up hotspots. 

Interviews will take place on either 31st March 2020 or 1st April 2020.
