Applications are invited for the position of International Lecturer in Computer Science delivering teaching at the Joint Institute in Weihai, China as part of the international strategic partnership that has been established between Beijing-Jiaotong University and Lancaster University (BJTU-LU). 

You are expected to deliver undergraduate modules in Computer Science and be available to start no later than June 2020 (first assignment to China in September 2020). 

You must hold a doctoral degree in Computer Science and are expected to have demonstrable excellence and commitment to research, teaching and mentoring of students.

Since September 2016 Lancaster University has been offering undergraduate programmes in Computing, Design, Engineering and Environmental Science to Chinese and international students, co-delivered by Lancaster and BJTU academics.  Graduates receive a degree from both institutions and a joint academic transcript. BJTU offers exciting opportunities for students to participate in study abroad, summer schools and other types of exchange opportunities at any of the three locations.  We are committed to providing students at Lancaster University College - Beijing Jiaotong University with an excellent student experience backed by a high quality and rigorous quality assured education.

Weihai is set in undulating hills featuring gentle slopes and broad valleys. Located in the East end of Shandong Province, Weihai is surrounded by the Yellow Sea to the North, East and South with a 986 kilometers (613 miles) of coastline.  It neighbours Yantai in the West and is separated from the Korean Peninsula and Japanese chain islands by the sea to the East.  The terrain of the city slopes gently, with a winding seashore interleaved with headland bays, harbours and islets.

You will be offered an indefinite contract, contingent on successful review following a period of probation.  You must be capable and willing to work overseas with a teaching workload for reasonable periods of time (i.e. two x ten weekly semesters) and effectively use the time in between preparing and assessing, and contributing as required, at Lancaster University. 

A typical annual workload model for this role will be (based on 1650 total hours)

330 hours departmental duties and meetings

660 hours research

660 hours teaching, preparation and assessment

 Comprising:

Making up to two annual visits of ten weeks duration each to teach at Weihei campus;

Complementing the internationally-leading research output of the School

Engaging with the administration an day-to-day running of the School

You will have a comprehensive induction at Lancaster University before your first assignment to Chin..  During the induction period and as part of your development programme, you will be assigned a mentor for Research & Teaching and will be actively involved in teaching (taking seminars and marking 1st year LU labs) and research at Lancaster University prior to going out to Weihai. You will be expected to engage with the University’s high quality teaching and academic practice training (e.g. CAP, ATLAS).

Members of academic staff are entitled to paid accommodation in Weihai, travel allowances and medical insurance in accordance with Lancaster University’s International (Short term) Assignment policy. 

You will be passionate about computer science research, with a clear track record of delivering internationally-leading research output in their fields, and will be a committed and reflective educator, with a desire to learn from others, innovate in teaching practices, and contribute to the collegial atmosphere in the School.
