Description :

Applications are invited for a 4 year PhD studentship within the EPSRC Thematic Doctoral Programme: SiMDisc (Science informed Manufacturing for Scientific Discovery)

Project description

This studentship aims to investigate the capability of producing three dimensional electronic devices utilising the Material Jetting method, a subset of Additive Manufacturing (commonly referred to 3D Printing). In collaboration with colleagues in the Faculty of Science and at The Manufacturing Technology Centre, this studentship will join a world leading research team and environment for the production of 3 dimensional electronic sensing devices, currently impossible to produce via traditional methods. The studentship will investigate the coupled manufacturing and materials challenges associated with the technique and determine the scientific discoveries necessary to unlock the potential of this method. Using state of the art equipment (at both institutions) the successful candidate will be immersed in the formulation, delivery, processing and characterisation of novel materials for this low waste, disruptive technology.

The studentship will be sponsored by the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and will benefit from links with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

Supervisory Team: Prof Chris Tuck (Engineering), Prof Richard Hague (Engineering), Dr Lyudmila Turyanska (Engineering), Dr Prof Mark Fromhold (Physics)

Eligibility

Candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a 1st -class or 2:1 degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related discipline.
