This new post offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Professor of Ophthalmology’s established visual science academic research group.  The post has been created to lead and oversee administration of the department’s ethical approval and NHS permissions processes, at both the start and end of academic research studies. This research governance role is expected to represent 60% of each working day, with the remaining time dedicated to providing PA support to the Professor of Ophthalmology, who is also Head of the Clinical Neurosciences Research Group at the University of Southampton.

The successful candidate will assist Principal Investigators and Project Managers within Vision Sciences, in the provision of research study support systems and technical assistance. These research projects will allow a dynamic group of vision scientists to study ocular disorders in new ways, paving the way to improving care for people with eye disease.

The Research Governance Administrator’s principal responsibilities will be in the set-up, on-going management and closure of research projects, conducted according to regulatory requirements across an NHS and University environment. Maintaining up to date, accurate records and liaising with internal and external bodies and partners are essential to this role. 

The post will require the following skills and experience: -

Excellent communication, interpersonal, relationship management and organisational skillsEffective oral and written communication skillsExcellent IT skills, particularly in spreadsheets and database managementExcellent attention to detail

You will have previous experience of working in a professional administrative role, preferably within Higher Education or similar research and development environment. Project management skills and previous experience in gaining research ethics and information governance permissions are desirable, including good clinical practice (GCP).

The post is fixed term for five years with a desired start date of early June 2020.
