Three Permanent full-time positions to manage the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC) research functions

One Fixed term (18 month) full-time position – Managing the impact and evaluation function within NETSCC

The Wessex Institute is a large enterprise unit within the Faculty of Medicine, situated at the University of Southampton’s Science Park, Chilworth. The Institute is focused on providing high-quality, practice-based research evidence to support decision makers in health and social care, and is home to one of the NIHR coordinating centres, NETSCC, which was established in 2008. 

NETSCC manages six research funding programmes including national programmes and Global Health Research (Units and Groups) on behalf of the NIHR and is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care.

We are looking for experienced high calibre candidates with a passion for applied health research to lead busy teams responsible for identifying and prioritising important areas for health research; advertising research and organising peer review and funding research; managing our Global Health programme; and managing the NETSCC impact and evaluation function. All four positions are covered by the job description provided and applicants will be deployed to one of the four areas but may be deployed to other Senior Programme Manager positions later in their career to provide career development opportunities and meet organisational requirements.  Candidates should specify in their covering letter if there are specific areas of interest.

As a Senior Research Manager, you will have proven leadership, organisation and people management skills (at a strategic level), experience of successfully driving quality and efficiency improvements to working practice and processes, be able to confidently communicate with and influence others, and have the ability to critically appraise research evidence and data. You will be joining an enthusiastic and cohesive team who are committed to adding maximum value to the management of health research.

The institute is within the University’s Faculty of Medicine and has a dedicated staff team focused on making a difference to patients and the public and providing research evidence to meet the needs of decision makers in health and social care. Our teams also comprise health research administrators, specialists in information management, finance, contracting, public and patient involvement and communications.

The salary indicated is the range that applies to the post of MSA 5 Senior Research Manager. Generally, staff are appointed to the first payment point, and then progress incrementally through the core zone at the rate of one pay point per year, subject to satisfactory performance.
