Southampton Education School is a flourishing centre of international research and teaching excellence. It has a strong programme of initial teacher education including primary, secondary and post-compulsory PGCE, an undergraduate programme in Education Studies, and a full portfolio of Masters and Doctoral degrees and professional development opportunities.

The Secondary PGCE programmes at the University of Southampton deliver Initial Teacher Education within the University and works in Partnership with over 100 local Secondary Schools. Our programme provides thorough preparation for teaching in relation to the QTS standards, while our research-led philosophy develops teachers whose independent and creative approach brings about high quality learning and teaching. We are seeking to appoint an English specialist who has recent and relevant experience and who would be able to support the English Lead colleague through teaching sessions at University and visiting trainees in schools to conduct monitoring and moderation visits. There would also be an expectation that the successful applicant would be able to contribute to other areas of Initial Teacher Education as required and as appropriate to their skills and experiences.

The successful candidate will be expected to work with colleagues in ITE. The post includes teaching in the English curriculum area, and other appropriate sessions, visiting trainees in their placement school and observing and assessing the quality of their teaching in relation to the QTS standards. The role requires liaison with trainees’ mentors in the school and assessing trainees’ work at Masters level. Working in collaboration with colleagues, the post holder has responsibility for:

Teaching PGCE trainees as required Arranging and participating in observations to analyse and evaluate Trainees’ teaching Assessing trainees in their teaching, and in their written assignments Maintaining records and paperwork as required 

The role will therefore include regular travel to our network of placement schools.
