This is an exciting cutting-edge project involving close collaboration between the University of Southampton (UK), Imperial College London (UK), the University of California Los Angeles (USA), and the University of Toronto (Canada), as well as companies including Arm, Corerain Technologies, Imagination Technologies, Maxeler Technologies, and Xilinx. The successful candidate will be based in Southampton, but will have the opportunity to travel frequently to America to attend research meetings and for a placement period at either UCLA or Toronto.

The PhD will undertake research in one or more of the following areas, related to hardware/software co-design for energy-efficient machine learning on mobile/embedded devices:

Hardware design for machine learning/deep learning

Software/algorithm development for machine learning/deep learning

Hardware/software co-design for improved performance/efficiency

Efficient software development for mobile/embedded systems

Run-time software adaptation for system resource management

The successful candidate will be based in the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. ECS hosts a strategic research centre in machine intelligence, an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Machine Intelligence for Nano- Electronic Devices and Systems, and the Arm-ECS Research Centre: an award-winning industry-academia collaboration between the university and Arm Research.
