Applications are invited for the above post based within the School of Biosciences at the Sutton Bonington Campus.   

Based within the Bioenergy and Brewing Science building, the purpose of this role is to provide specialist technical support to plan and oversee the day-to-day operation of our nanobrewery and allied pilot plant facilities and to provide practical instruction to students (MSc/PhD) to teach them how to how to formulate, brew and package a range of beer styles. 

The role holder will be responsible for the upkeep, cleaning and maintenance of the nanobrewery and practical brewing equipment to ensure a safe and hygienic practice as well as maintaining the equipment and stocks of the diverse raw materials used in student designed beers. 

Duties will include;

Plan and oversee the day to day technical running of the nanobrewery and pilot plant facilities, allocating resources and providing technical supervision to ensure work objectives and hygiene standards are met.Conduct regular routine maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of equipment/ apparatus personally or through others in own area of responsibility, as required, and advise on the purchasing of equipment and consumables ensuring the adequate stocks of supplies and maintaining appropriate records.Maintain and develop the brewing equipment in experimental brewery (e.g. 10 L fermentation vessels, pilot wort production facilities), taking a role in evaluating new technologies, equipment and techniques relative to practical brewing at this scale.Monitor Health and Safety in the performance of all duties by assessing the risks of any planned activitiesContribute to the general running of facilities and building maintenance in liaison with the local technical team leader.

Candidates must have proven technical experience in practical brewing techniques and use of associated equipment and the ability to competently operate pilot scale brewing equipment to produce a variety of beer styles.

Experience of running fermentation equipment, working in a microbiology laboratory environment and of culture methods for yeast propagation would be desirable.

Candidates must have a sound understanding of Health and Safety and hygiene regulations for laboratory and pilot plant work and understand the implications of non-compliance of others.

Candidates must have a minimum HNC or equivalent, plus considerable work experience in a relevant role or proven track record with substantial work experience in a relevant technical or scientific role.

This post is a permanent full-time (36.25 hours per week) post, however job share arrangements may be considered.
