Research Associate/Fellow in Forced Marriage and Modern Slavery (Fixed Term) (SOC111420)

This role is part of the University’s Rights Lab, a Beacon of Excellence, home to the world’s largest and leading group of modern slavery researchers.

You will work with PI Helen McCabe in the Rights Lab’s Law and Policy Programme on the AHRC-funded project “To Have and the Hold”: Understanding the Relationship Between Forced Marriage and Slavery”. The project will be delivered in collaboration with key NGOs operating in this area: Karma Nirvana and the Minderoo Foundation (Walk Free). We are looking for a flexible research associate/fellow with diverse skills to deliver research, disseminate research findings, work with project partners and other key stakeholders, and represent the project at external events. 

To develop an understanding of current law and policy frameworks, the role holder will survey and analyse international and domestic on forced marriage from around the world. You will help build a new global database of law, policy, and practice relating to forced marriage, conducting mixed methods analysis on the evidence gathered. 

You will also conduct a qualitative inductive analysis of survivor narratives of forced marriage and modern slavery. You will build on an existing deductive analysis to understand how survivors experience and link forced marriage and modern slavery; factors affecting vulnerability; associated power-structures; and key agents. This work will support the development of case studies and typologies arising from survivor experiences. 

You will support the impact strategy of the project, and have the opportunity to use your initiative to identify, and apply for funding to pursue,new project areas. You will also be able to pursue ongoing professional development opportunities.

This post is available on fixed term basis for 9 months and is available to start from the 1st June 2020. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours); however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 30 hours per week).
