Research Fellow on Optical Wireless Communications

Be a part of the University of Southampton, an institution in the top one per cent of world universities and one of the UK’s Russell group research-intensive universities. We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise activities. You will work in two world leading groups at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and the Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) School and will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that they provide. Next-Generation Wireless carries out research on future wireless communications systems and their components, focussing on all aspects of communications and information-theory, as well as on solutions for all layers of the seven-layer OSI architecture. The Telecommunications Systems Laboratory of the ORC is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for experimentation in photonic systems and provides direct access to the UK’s National Dark Fibre Facility, a unique geographically spread transmission facility dedicated to research, linking together four top British universities.

The position is part of the COALESCE research initiative funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). You will be responsible for transferring knowledge between the two groups and facilitating the implementation of joint research experiments. The work will be reported both internally to colleagues at the University of Southampton and more widely to the COALESCE project partners.

To be successful, you must have a strong background in communications and be familiar with fibre optic and optical communications. You will have good modelling skills and have interest in modelling and analysing the performance of communication systems. You will conduct research both independently as well as with other members of the team and our external collaborators. You will have interest in experimental work involving hardware (even though you may not be required to carry out such experiments independently).

A willingness and ability to help with the supervision of PhD students and contribute to both the ORC’s and Electronic and Computer Science's open and rich research environment will also be highly desirable.

You must also have proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data and of working as part of a collaborative research team. You must hold a PhD* or equivalent professional qualification and experience related to communication theory, optical communication or related field.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.   The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
