The Role

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has a strong reputation for outstanding teaching, innovative research and strong links with industry.

The Department is seeking to make an appointment at Senior Lecturer (Teaching) level in Automotive Engineering to make a significant contribution to the development and implementation of taught academic Automotive programmes at postgraduate level.

The appointment will play a key role in the newly created £70m Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS), which is currently under construction and is intended to be one of the top three sites in the world for advanced propulsion systems research. This is a unique opportunity for a leadership role in one of the key strategic pillars of the new Institute (Excellence in Teaching), providing world-leading post-graduate education.

The successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the design, implementation, and management of a suite of taught Automotive Engineering and Automotive Technology Programmes at postgraduate level. As Director of Studies for these programmes, he/she will coordinate teaching across IAAPS. The candidate will also deliver high quality teaching, creating a highly motivating and supportive learning environment that will attract high calibre students. A key part of this educational initiative will be the creation of a new integrated laboratory and group activities. These will benefit from specialist facilities being made available following the creation of the new facilities at IAAPS.

IAAPS builds on 40 years of continuous propulsion research and education at the University. Our research spans all technology sectors including electrification, future fuels, and advanced development processes. We have strong and lasting research relationships with industry partners from across the automotive sector, from global vehicle manufacturers to innovative start-ups. These relationships are leveraged to inform and enrich our teaching.

We have an extensive portfolio of collaborative research and innovation projects with all major UK-based car makers and numerous other organisations overseas. We engage strongly in industry-academic partnerships funded through the Advanced Propulsion Centre, Innovate UK, and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. We also support small businesses, innovators, and entrepreneurs through our Advanced Engineering Business Hub.

Extensive new facilities opening in 2021 have been developed with major investment to provide state-of-the-art experimental research platforms. They will underpin precise systems level investigations that will offer deep insights into the complex nature of transitioning to future Ultra Low and Zero Emission Vehicles.

IAAPS also includes the new EPSRC Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT), which over the next five years will provide close to 100 fully funded studentships for a four-year combined training and research programme leading to an MRes and PhD. The current automotive propulsion research academic team has an excellent track-record in delivering industry-relevant projects and has long-established collaborations with industrial partners. This new appointment is expected to benefit from, and contribute to, this strong industry partnership in the taught programmes.

Applicants must provide a maximum four-page summary of their expertise to be able to deliver education which supports the future needs of highly trained graduates in automotive engineering and technology.

The University of Bath is situated on a modern campus surrounded by attractive countryside overlooking the centre of Bath, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage City, famous for its Georgian architecture and its annual literature and music festivals. It is a safe and friendly campus with strong student services and excellent sports facilities. Bath is located 100 miles west of London and is easily accessible by air, road, and rail.

The role is offered on a full-time basis (36.5 hours/week).
