Description :

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to recruit a talented and enthusiastic lecturer. There are a number of focused research centres within the Department broadly covering the following engineering activities: Aerospace, Automotive, Design, Dynamics and Control, Electric Vehicles, Energy, Fluid Dynamics, Manufacturing, Materials, Medical, Structures and Solid Mechanics, Turbomachinery, Robotics, and Sustainability. The candidate will be expected to bring new expertise which aligns with one or more of the activities of existing research groups.

The applicant must be able to demonstrate the capability to conduct independent and/or collaborative research within the scope of Mechanical Engineering, obtain external research funding and publish high-quality research papers. In addition, the candidate should have capability to contribute to teaching.

The candidate’s principal role in teaching will be to contribute to design activities in Mechanical Engineering such as: teaching design foundations in years 1 and 2; and supervising group design and individual projects for students in the latter years. The appointee may also contribute to the studio-based MEng programme in Integrated Design Engineering. The programme covers a broad range of knowledge and skills (e.g. core mechanical and electronic/electrical engineering, systems theory, design integration, information technology, social science, creativity, innovation and business) while providing a strong emphasis on the delivery of designed solutions to technical problems.

Applicants must provide two statements, the first a four-page outline of a potential research grant application and a second single page on their teaching vision. Typically, the research application would be aimed at the EPSRC New Investigator Award and it would be expected that the successful lecturer submit this within the first year of the appointment. The one-page teaching vision statement should outline the candidate’s areas of expertise and any previous experience of teaching engineering design - including some indication of the number of students involved and examples of projects and assessment activities undertaken.

The successful applicant will work in a progressive academic environment, benefiting from the supportive, collaborative and well-organised Department and Faculty system at the University. There is a strong culture of providing newly-appointed lecturers the necessary support and freedom to develop their academic careers. We encourage the development of a diverse and inclusive workforce and offer excellent benefits, with options for flexible working.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to give a presentation of their current research experience and future research ambitions at a date prior to a formal interview.
