Description :

An investigation of gendered patient-doctor interaction in UK primary health care

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2021/22 Academic Year.

Despite evidence that doctor and patient gender can impact on the outcomes of doctor-patient interaction, there has been little research to date exploring interactional processes through which the influence of gender occurs. The proposed project would involve a secondary analyses of GP consultation video-data to investigate how verbal and non-verbal GP-patient interaction varies by the gender of GP and patient.  Please contact Dr Lucy Brindle (lab2@soton.ac.uk) for further information before making an application.

Supervisory Team:

Dr Lucy Brindle and Dr Jane Frankland are medical sociologists and health service researchers with expertise in HCP-patient communication. The studentship would involve a non-academic partnership; the student would be assigned a GP mentor and supported to participate in a pre-established GP stakeholder group advising about the development of clinical communication training drawing on this dataset.

Skills Required

The project would be suitable for a student with a social/human sciences first degree and an interest in gender in healthcare.
