COVID-19 and the impact on UK cities, residential mobility and housing

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2021/22 Academic Year.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world in many ways. One of the biggest changes is where people work. This research will fill an important gap in knowledge on how the dramatic and possibly long-lasting shift towards homeworking impact on cities, housing demand and residential mobility. The empirical focus will be on the UK using secondary datasets. Highly topical questions this research will tackle include whether Covid- 19 is changing housing preferences and residential mobility – and the implications for the UK settlement system. Good knowledge of quantitative methods is required for this research.

Supervisory Team:

The PhD would be supervised by Dr Darja Reuschke in the School of Geography and Environmental Science (d.reuschke@soton.ac.uk). She is experienced in urban and housing research. Her recent homeworking research has attracted attention internationally and impacted on policy decision making including of the Welsh government. 

Skills Required

The PhD will exploit newest secondary data sources. Quantitative methods skills are required to make use of these datasets. The candidate should have good statistical knowledge. Depending on the research design, the student may also use GIS methods to enhance the individual-level analysis.

Funding

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £15285 (2020/21 UKRI rate), plus payment of programme fees.  Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).

Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students).  Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master's year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
