The relationship between music engagement, creativity and wellbeing in adolescents and young adults: longitudinal models and cross-sectional investigations
A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2021/22 Academic Year.
Music therapy and mindfulness interventions can result in positive changes to wellbeing and cognition in a number of mental health conditions. However, there is limited evidence to indicate how engaging with musical hobbies may be beneficial in children and younger, healthy adults. This project aims to assess how engagement with music is related to wellbeing and resilience in children and young adults, and how it compares to mindfulness. Both may be used to promote these areas of psychological health. Longitudinal modelling with existing datasets and cross-sectional experimental studies will be utilized to conduct this investigation.

Skills Required
Some knowledge of path modelling or latent modelling.Interest in wellbeing, and resilience in adolescents and young adults.Experience running experimental studies with participants. Some experience with younger adults and adolescents preferred but not essential.Funding
South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £15285 (2020/21 UKRI rate), plus payment of programme fees. Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students). Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master's year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
