Preventing child anxiety disorders: Identifying therapeutic targets and improving access 

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2021/22 Academic Year.

Anxiety disorders are the most common child mental health problems. This project focuses on preventing child anxiety disorders by identifying i) modifiable risk factors to use as targets in anxiety prevention programmes and, ii) how to make anxiety prevention programmes accessible to those who most need them.

The ESRC SCDTP offers this PhD studentship to join the Centre for Innovation in Mental Health and undertake excellent research training (including in clinical and qualitative interviewing, engagement in Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) activities, laboratory experimental procedures, research dissemination and statistical programming in R). This project suits a candidate wanting to launch their career in clinical psychological science.

Skills Required

This project requires an individual with an excellent academic background in psychology and strong inter-personal skills.   Essential criteria will be a good BSc and / or MSc degree in psychology or neuroscience and demonstrable interest in clinical psychological science. Experience of conducting human laboratory research and working with infants and parents are desirable. 

Funding

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £15285 (2020/21 UKRI rate), plus payment of programme fees.  Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).

Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students).  Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master's year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
