Research Fellow in the Field-Cycling NMR of Long-Lived Spin States (1307620EB)

The project involves the study of long-lived nuclear spin states and their response to changes in magnetic field and to resonant audio frequency irradiation in the low magnetic field regime. You will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of equipment for performing field-cycling audio-frequency NMR experiments, and in the design and implementation of novel NMR experiments employing this equipment. The fellow will be responsible for interpreting the data in terms of nuclear spin dynamics and relaxation phenomena, and for preparing results for publication.

It is essential you have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in either Physics or Chemistry or a related field. Practical experience of field-cycling NMR; NMR of long-lived states and  quantum chemistry calculations of nuclear spin interaction parameters: knowledge of NMR relaxation theory are essential. Experience of audio-frequency NMR experiments in low magnetic field and experience of using and programming SpinDynamica software is desirable. You will spend a small fraction of the time helping supervise student research.

You will join our Magnetic Resonance Section at the Department of Chemistry of Southampton University. The Section has a well-equipped NMR facility including one 700MHz, three 600MHz, one 500MHz, two 400 MHz and a 300 MHz spectrometers. A variety of probes allow liquid-state and solid-state experiments as well as micro-imaging and cryogenic experiments. The section offers wide expertise that spans from theory of spin dynamics to NMR methodology in solid and liquid state, microfluidics NMR, biomolecular NMR in liquid and solid state and NMR at cryogenic temperatures. An in-house mechanical workshop service is available.
