About the Medical School

The Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine (FHSCM) comprises three schools: the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Allied Health (NMAH), the School of Applied Health & Social Care and Social Work (AHS&SW) and the Medical School.

Edge Hill University Medical School (EHUMS) is one of only five new medical schools in England, established after a rigorous competitive bidding process as part of the government's expansion of undergraduate medical training places and is in fact the only new undergraduate medical school in the North West.

Edge Hill University has a longstanding history of delivering high quality/high volume profession specific and multiprofessional postgraduate programmes including: MSc Leadership Development and Management, Master of Surgery, Master of Medicine, MA Clinical Education. We also have a suite of PG Certificates and Diplomas and an extensive portfolio of PG/CPD modules, which continues to grow.  In recognition of our multiprofessional ethos to learning, the Medical School will incorporate the Non-medical Prescribing programme and the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (direct entry and apprenticeships routes) from spring 2021. We have contracts with HEE for PG/CPD and also work extensively with partner organisations and PSRBs.

We commenced an MSc Physician Associate Studies programme and MBChB with Foundation Year (6 year programme) in September 2019 and we recruited to  our new MBChB (5 year programme) in September 2020. The new undergraduate medical curriculum with its focus on widening access to medicine (circa 50% of the year), interprofessional, team-based learning and with a strong emphasis on community and primary care, offers a new approach to undergraduate medical education designed to better equip doctors for the demands of 21st century health care and to meet the needs of the local NHS.

The Medical School is a vibrant and rapidly growing School with an evolving staff body, many of whom are clinically and/or research active. Developing its research profile is a key focus for the School.
