Title: Evolution of Yeast Variation During Continuous Manufacturing Processes

Evolution of yeast diversity during biomanufacturing processes This project explores the heterogeneity of yeast cell populations used to produce high-value proteins (e.g. vaccines, therapeutics). While the annual market for these yeast-derived products is over $40Bn, the production cell populations become heterogeneous, developing mixed phenotypes and lowered production yields. Such yeast diversification presents intriguing academic questions and industrial application opportunities. The project will investigate key yeast products (e.g. VLP vaccines, albumin) in testing two main hypotheses: (i) high-yield production drives diversification and selection in yeast cultures; (ii) natural yeast diversity is exploitable to address this problem. Training will be given in state-of-the-art technologies including time-lapse microscopy, image streaming flow cytometry, genome-/single cell-sequencing, microfluidics, fermentation scale-up. The student will be based in the University's vibrant and well supported fungal-biology grouping. An industry placement with Phenotypeca Ltd will include broader commercial training. The cross-sector supervisory team combines extensive project-relevant expertise, ensuring a high-quality programme.
