Description :

The Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Southampton is a community of scholars, archivists, librarians and students from different disciplines. The institute is named after the Reverend Dr James Parkes, who campaigned, as early as the 1920s, against the rise of racist nationalism in Europe. One of the key aspects of the Parkes Institute’s activities is to continue, through research, education and public engagement, the fight against antisemitism and all forms of racism.

The role

The Parkes Institute and History are launching an MA Holocaust History in October 2023 and are seeking to recruit a lecturer in Holocaust history. The MA will draw upon the extensive primary source collections held at the Parkes Library and Jewish archive collections. The new lecturer will be asked to contribute to the teaching of Parkes and History modules. These may include: the History BA core modules and option modules such as Jewish Life and Death in Europe (Y1), Responses to the Holocaust (Y2), Special Subject on the Holocaust (Y3), and modules on the new MA. You will also contribute to the life and administrative running of History and the Parkes Institute.

About you

You will have a PhD in Holocaust history and/or expertise in Jewish history and culture, cultural history, heritage, memory, and Holocaust education. You will demonstrate a commitment to education and an ability to bring your own research to bear on the enhancement of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will be an active researcher, in the field of Holocaust history, with recognition at a national and level. You will have well-defined plans for the next REF. We value collegiality, enthusiasm, and a keenness for interdisciplinary work is an advantage.
